Margaret Lorraine Nelson, age 93 of Woodville WI, died on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Margaret was born July 25, 1923 in Baldwin WI to parents John and Alida (Schreurs) Obbink. Margaret attended school in Baldwin, and graduated from Baldwin High School with the Class of 1941. She would be united in marriage to Roger Nelson on December 4, 1942. Their union in marriage would be blessed with four children: JoAnn, Marge, Robert, and Judy.

Besides raising her family as a wife, mother, and homemaker, Margaret also helped do the bookkeeping at the Red and White Meat Market, which later became Nelson and Johnsons which Roger owned and operated in Woodville. In later years, she would perform those same bookkeeping duties for Bob’s Country Market. Besides working day-to-day at the store with Roger, Margaret always found joy in serving a nice meal and cooking with Roger.

Margaret was a quiet and classy lady, who mastered all things “crafty”, such as quilting, crocheting, knitting, sewing, cross-stitching, and needlepoint. She quilted alongside the women of Zion Lutheran Church, and made baby quilts for all of her great-grandkids. Margaret worked for many years as a custodian alongside Roger at Zion Lutheran Church. Furthermore, she was appointed the first woman to the Zion Church Council. She also served as the Treasurer of the Park View Guild. Her family recalls her helping others with clothing, food and meals as a coordinator for the Red Cross in the late 1950’s, after a tornado came through the Woodville area. Margaret will be missed by her family, and generations of people who came to know her through her involvement in the community.

Margaret is survived by her children, JoAnn Birdsong of Sacramento CA, Marge Sandfort of Hudson WI, Robert (Terry) Nelson of Minneapolis MN, and Judy (Duane) Veenendaal of Baldwin WI; grandchildren, Steven (Tessie) Leehe, Brenda Leehe James, Carrie Treptow, Katie (Anthony) Stitt, Ben (Fran Killian) Nelson, Annie Nelson Ogunro, Eve (Adam) Adamson, Ryan (Kelly) Veenendaal, Abby (Logan) Kimberly, and Leah Veenendaal; great-grandchildren, Derrick (McKenzie), Nathan, Sean, Emily, Madison, Sophie, Hannah, Courtney, Zach, Marylove, Vivian, Addy, Clara, Trenton, Dawson, Landon, Gavin and Reese; as well as many other nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; sons-in-law, Jim Sandfort, and Jim Birdsong; sisters, Evelyn, Mabel, Agnes, and Hazel; and brothers, Marvin, Walter, and Edgar.

Funeral Services for Margaret Nelson will be held 11AM, Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 221 Lockwood Street in Woodville WI, with Pastor Keith Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at the Lone Pine Cemetery in Woodville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church, and also from 4:00-7:00pm on Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church. Margaret Nelson's Tribute Wall

Tributes (4):

  1. My sympathy to the family. Have known Margaret since I was in grade school, and had a nice visit with her at Jim Sandfort’s funeral. May you rest in peace.

  2. Oh, what wonderful memories come rushing in of a loving family that welcomed everyone into their home. Your mother was a great lady, and I will always remember the long phone calls between her and my mother, but most of all I will remember her laughter. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

  3. Sorry for the loss of your love one. John 5:28, 29 assures Jesus will restore life to those who has died. Revelation 21:3, 4 gives further assurance death will be swallowed up forever. This is a comforting thought knowing your loved one is in God’s memory. Hope this brings comfort.
