Dr. Raymond Earl Asp, age 95 of Lake St. Croix Beach, MN died peacefully Saturday, November 11, 2017 (Veterans Day) at Comforts of Home in Hudson. Raymond was born August 19, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Ernest and Dagny (Thompson) Asp. Raymond graduated from John Marshall High School in Minneapolis. Following high school, he moved to California to work for Douglas Aircraft. He voluntarily enlisted in the armed forces and proudly served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
Upon his return, he attended the University of Minnesota where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree in 1951. On August 18, 1951, he was united in marriage to Elaine Hermanson at St. Anthony Lutheran Church in St. Anthony Park. For nearly half a century, he enjoyed his work as a dentist as he owned his own dental practice in Anoka, Minnesota for 47 years.
When Dr. Asp wasn’t working with patients, he enjoyed a quiet day on the golf course. He loved golfing at Greenhaven Golf Course in Anoka. He enjoyed traveling and had special trips to Australia and New Zealand.
Photography, especially wildlife and landscapes, was a hobby he enjoyed on all his travels, but especially the many family camping trips to the Rocky Mountains. Ray also cherished spending time with his grandchildren at Red Cedar Lake, WI and Grand Marais, MN. He was a kind and gentle man and will be missed by his family and friends.
Raymond is survived by his children Wayne (Julie) Asp of Lakeland, Darlene (David) Bentz of Green Bay; grandchildren Ryan Asp, Michael (Danielle) Asp, Stacy (Kyle) Crawford, Stephanie (Rich) Robinson, Nicole Bentz, Victoria ‘Tori” Bentz; great grandchildren Ian, Elena, Kaelyn, Miriam and Grace Asp. Raymond is preceded by his wife of 63 years Elaine, his parents, sisters Elenore Asp Severson and Florence Watson.
Funeral service for Dr. Raymond Asp will be at 11 AM, Wednesday November 15, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 14107 South Hudson Rd., Afton. Burial with full military honors will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. His grandchildren will have the honor of being casketbearers. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the University of Minnesota Dental School or the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Nongame Wildlife Program. Funeral services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson.
