Gordon D. Place, age 87 of Baldwin, passed away January 29, 2018 at the Baldwin Care Center surrounded by his loving family. Gordon was born September 5, 1930 in Martell Township to Albion and Gladys (Clemetson) Place. He graduated from Ellsworth High School, the Class of 1949. Gordon proudly served his country in the United States Army, as an MP and motor pool at Camp Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Gordon worked for Zillmann Chevy/Oldsmobile, now Jacobson’s, for many years until his retirement. He was united in marriage to Maxine Vernice Eldred on September 20, 1952. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Candace, Todd, and Corey. Gordon and Maxine were fortunate to share 65 wonderful years together. Both devoted in their faith, were longtime members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin.

Working with cars all his life, Gordon appreciated classic and collector cars, as well as old engines and tractors. He was especially fond of camping and being in the yard. Most important to Gordon was his family. He was very proud of his children, and treasured his time with his grandsons and great grandchildren.

Gordon will remain in the hearts of his wife, Maxine “Micki;” children, Candace (Irvin) Evenson, Todd (Rhonda) Place, and Corey (Barbara) Place; grandsons: Jason (Margie) Evenson, Christopher Evenson, Travis (Andrea) Place, Justin (Jennifer) Place, Tyler (Shelley) Place, and Peter Place; great-grandchildren: MacKenzie Evenson, Alexander Evenson, Landon Evenson, Kaylee Evenson, Brooklyn Place, Tanner Place, and Lynden Place; brothers, Wayne (Arlene) Place and Gerald (Barb) Place; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Hugo (Gwen) Weibusch, Keith Eldred, Bud Young, and Novie Place; along with many nieces, nephews, and family friends.

Gordon Place's Tribute Wall

Tributes (4):

  1. Todd and family our prayers are with you. May your memories lift you up on the coming days.
    Deb and Zane Bollom

  2. My deepest love to Micki, Candy, Todd and Corey on the loss of their great husband and father. We all knew Chick as an affable and exceedingly kind fellow who worked diligently at Zillmann’s for all of those many years, married to the most wonderful woman in Micki; but, I was able to see up close and personal beneath the veneer of the man, into his heart and soul. I believe it was the summer of 1972 when my family was without a place to live for many months. Showing the ultimate demonstration of love for friends in need, the Places offered for us to come and live with them while we were without a home. Who would do that? Now that I am a sixty one year old man with a family of my own, I’m nearly astounded when I reflect on that most generous showing of support to my family. The entire Place family treated us with great respect and consideration during our plight; and never complained about us infringing upon their space and imposing on their lives.
God rest your soul, dear friend. I know that you are already looking down on us from your rightfully-deserved place in heaven.
    Much love to all,
    Garry Landowski
    Houston, Texas

  3. I am so very sorry for your loss, Micki and family. I pray your special memories will be a comfort to you. God Bless you all.

  4. My first husband, Sonny Pankow would not let anyone but Gordy work on his vehicles….it was like Gordy “walked on water to him”. Sonny was so particular with his cars, I can’t remember all the times we drove from Hudson to Zillmans just so Gordy could work on them….and if he was busy and he had someone else do it, maybe even Todd…Sonny would be sure he knew what to do. Sonny died in 1997 after spending 17 years at Christian Community Home in Hudson. My condolences to you all. I also worked at the Hudson School with Shirley. Bev Nuessmeier
