Betty Schmidt

d. March 9, 2019

Betty Ellen Schmidt, 82, of St. Cloud, MN, & formerly of Hammond, WI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Country Manor in Sartell, MN. Betty was born on August 10, 1935 in Hammond to parents George & Ella Brummels. She grew up in Hammond, attending the Hammond High School. She worked as an administrative secretary in both insurance & legal offices until her retirement in 1996. Betty was initially wed to Delbert Swenson, with whom she was blessed with four children.

This union would inevitably dissolve, but time led her to the love of her life, Gervase Schmidt. Together they were joined in marriage on May 3, 1986 at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin, WI. They shared 32 years of happiness & joy with each other.

Aside from being a loving wife & mother, Betty had many passions & hobbies throughout her life. Betty loved to spend time outside & was an avid gardener. If it could be grown in the Wisconsin climate, Betty probably grew it at some point in her life. Whether it was a flower, a vegetable, or even a fruit tree, she had the green thumb & the tenacity to plant it. If Betty couldn’t be found in her garden, you might have caught her playing a round of croquet or Scrabble, concentrating on a difficult crossword puzzle, or spending time with her grandkids. Betty’s warmth & her tender soul will be missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

Betty will remain in the hearts of her beloved husband, Gervase Schmidt; her dear children, Kay (Bob) Zwald, Kathy Tiggemann, Brian (Karen) Swenson, & Alan Swenson; her prized grandchildren; her precious great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, extended family & caring friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, George & Ella Brummels; and her sisters, Eunice and Donna.

A Private Funeral Service for Betty was held on Monday, March 25, 2019 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin. Services entrusted to O’Connell Family Funeral Homes.
