Almost 75 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the remains of five U.S. sailors who perished when their battleship was sunk there have been identified, the Pentagon said Monday. Previously, they had been classified as unknowns. During the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which plunged the U.S. into World War II, many Oklahoma sailors jumped from the ship as it rolled over in about 50 feet of water. But hundreds were trapped below decks and died.
The five men, who were exhumed last year from their graves in Hawaii and examined in special military laboratories, were among 429 sailors and Marines killed when the USS Oklahoma was torpedoed and capsized. Chief Petty Officer Duff Gordon, 52, of Hudson, Wis. is one of the five that have been identified.
Military Funeral service for Duff Gordon will be 1:00PM on Wednesday, March 30th at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 So. 11th Street in Hudson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at O’Connell’s. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Willow River Cemetery of Hudson. Memorials preferred to your local American Legion or VFW Posts. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.
