It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diane Margaret Dettmann, a beloved wife, sister, mother, and cherished educator, who left us on May 14, 2026, in Hudson, Wisconsin at the age of 78. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 7, 1947 to Harold Thomas and Esther Aina Elleson. Preceded in death by her parents, brother Tom, and husband John Hohl. Survived by siblings, Mary Elleson-Jones and Mike Elleson, husband, Allan Dettmann, and family members and friends.
After graduating from the University of Minnesota she made a profound impact on the lives of those around her, nurturing minds and hearts as a dedicated teacher throughout her career in St. Paul. Notably Diane was one of the first educators in the United States to achieve accreditation from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In recognition of this accomplishment she traveled to the White House where she and colleagues were honored by President Clinton in a ceremony in the Rose Garden. But she was most proud of the lives of the students and teachers she touched. After retiring she enjoyed writing and published several books.
Diane experienced many happy years with John Hohl before his death. She was fortunate to find a second love and enjoyed many years with Allan Dettmann as they resided in Afton, Minnesota. Allan’s family welcomed Diane and she was surrounded by their love and support. She lived a rich and full life and will be sadly missed.
We encourage those who loved Diane to donate to the charity of their choice in her memory.
