Eldon Samuel Huber, age 89, of Ellsworth, passed away on June 12, 2025, at the Spring Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Eldon was born on May 27, 1936, in Ellsworth, the son of Richard and Alma (Samuel) Huber. He was raised in Ellsworth and graduated from Ellsworth High School before enlisting in the United States Navy. As Eldon proudly said, he was a Tin Can Sailor. He served in the Pacific Ocean as a cook and received the China Service Medal.
Upon returning home, he was married to Mary Douglas, and together they were blessed with a son, Jimmy. Although their union eventually dissolved, Eldon and Jimmy remained very close, sharing many favorite pastimes together. On August 5, 1982, Eldon was united in marriage to Maxine Place at the home of her son, Don Monett. For 42 years, they blended their families and shared life’s journey side by side.
Outside of his love for Maxine, Eldon’s great passions were patriotism and motorcycles. A proud Harley-Davidson man, he rode for over 64 years. His adventures took him across countless country roads, and he even once collided with a full-grown cow—and lived to tell the tale! He and Maxine treasured their trips to Sturgis, where they enjoyed time with friends and admired the many decked-out bikes. Eldon was also active in civic life. He was a longtime member of the River Falls Moose Lodge, where he served for over 20 years, including time as Deputy Supreme Governor. He was a proud member of the Ellsworth American Legion and the VFW, and belonged to their honor society, the 40 & 8 Society (La Société des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux). At home, Eldon loved putzing around in his garage—especially if Elvis was playing in the background—and whipping something up in the kitchen. But fair warning: if you dined with him, he liked his food spicy hot! He also took pride in his collection of rings and Harley belt buckles.
Eldon is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Maxine; his stepchildren: Joan Baillargeon, David (Barbara) Monett, DJ (Kathy) Monett; daughter-in-law Alice Monett; grandchildren: Cody (Shelby), Christopher (Courtney), Daniel (Jessica), Marissa (Josh), Nicole (Mike), Ryan (Karibia), Ross (Marianne), Riah (Dietrich), and Ana; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Jimmy (Rhonda) Huber; stepchildren Kris Manson and Don Monett; and siblings Rosco (Violette), Irwin (Phyllis), Erna and Marie (Allen) Blegan.
