James Russell McFarland II, age 90, passed away peacefully. He was born in Grafton, North Dakota in 1935, the second of eight children to James Russell Sr. and Gladys McFarland.
Jim was a self-made man whose career in banking reflected determination and steady advancement. He began his work in Grafton, later continuing in Mandan and Fargo, North Dakota, while pursuing his degree from Rutgers University. Over the years, he rose through the ranks at institutions that would become part of today’s Wells Fargo system. His career ultimately brought him to the Twin Cities, where he served at Drovers State Bank in South St. Paul, later acquired by Bremer Bank. He concluded his distinguished career as President of Northeast State Bank of Minneapolis.
Jim was known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and the lasting relationships he built throughout his life and career. Outside of work, he found great enjoyment in fishing on Lake of the Woods and spending time on the golf course.
In retirement, Jim split his time between Naples, Florida and Hudson, Wisconsin, continuing to value time with family and lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Russell Sr. and Gladys McFarland; his brothers, Curtis and Gordon; his sister, Lois Hanson; brother-in-law Gerald Jackson; sisters-in-law June and Joan Kieley; and nephews Gary Jackson, Thomas Cossette, and Mark Cossette
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Kathleen (“Kaye”); his sons, Larry (Jackie), Michael (Christian), Stephen (Linda), and James (Dawn); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sisters, Darleen Jackson, Ardith Demers (Gary), and Inez Hager (Robert); his brother, Arlynn (Helen); Brother-in-law Ted Hanson; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Johanna Shores, whose warmth, dignity, and support were a true source of comfort.
Jim’s legacy is one of hard work, integrity, and deep commitment to family and friends.
