James Robert “Jim” Stauber, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, in Woodbury, Minnesota. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, Jim lived a full and meaningful life rooted in family, faith, and service.
Born on October 10, 1935, in Duluth, Minnesota, Jim was the son of Rudolph and Josephine Stauber. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Duluth before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Minnesota Duluth. His education laid the foundation for a long and respected career in Northern Minnesota’s mining industry. Jim began his professional journey in computer data programming and later rose to serve as Head of Safety—a role that reflected his dedication to the well-being of others.
On August 1, 1964, Jim married Donna (Erchul) Stauber, beginning a partnership marked by love, laughter, and shared devotion to their family. Together they raised three children: Meg Stauber Bel, Liz (Stauber) Johnson, and Fred Stauber. Jim was also a proud father-in-law to Jeff Johnson and the late Rus Bel.
Jim cherished his role as “Papa” to his granddaughters—Megan Johnson, Kenzie Johnson, and Zoe Bel—who brought him immense joy. Whether cheering them on at events or sharing quiet moments together, he treasured every opportunity to be part of their lives.
A man of deep faith and community spirit, Jim served as a lay minister at Holy Spirit Church in Virginia, Minnesota as well as serving on the Marquette School Board. He was also a proud member of the Air National Guard. His commitment to service extended beyond formal roles as he was a member of the Planning and Zoning Committee for the city of Virginia; he was always ready with a helping hand or kind word for those around him. Later, he and Donna volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program.
Jim found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved fishing and boating on Northern Minnesota’s lakes, golfing with friends and family, tending his garden with care, berry picking during summer months, walking outdoors, and watching sports—especially cheering on his beloved Minnesota Vikings and UMD teams. His sweet tooth was legendary among those who knew him best; he delighted in Donna’s baking and cooking and was given the nickname of "Cookie Monster"
He is survived by his loving wife of over 61 years, Donna; children Meg Stauber Bel, Liz (Stauber) Johnson (Jeff), and Fred Stauber; granddaughters Megan Johnson, Kenzie Johnson, and Zoe Bel; as well as many nieces and nephews who held him dear.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph and Josephine Stauber; brothers Tom Stauber and Ray Stauber; father- and mother-in-law Joseph (Krexer) and Margaret Erchul; and son-in-law Rus Bel.
A Memorial Service will be held on February 20 at 2pm to honor Jim’s life of faith and dedication at O'Connell Funeral Home in Hudson, WI. Visitation will begin at 1pm prior to the service. It is the family's wishes to wear something blue in honor of Jim.
Jim’s legacy is one of steadfast love for his family, unwavering faith in God, pride in his work and country—and an enduring appreciation for life’s joys both big and small. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
