It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Joseph Gegen, who left this world far too soon on August 17, 2025, at the age of 18. Born on September 16, 2006 in Hastings, Minnesota, John faced life with a spirit and courage that was beyond his young years. He bravely battled cancer with a positive spirit. Though his journey was full of challenges, he remained a source of light, love, and laughter for those who knew him. John was a devoted son, a cherished brother, and a loving friend. He often expressed gratitude for his family, frequently proclaiming that he had "the best family ever." His mother, Rochelle Gegen, his father, Jon Gegen, and his brothers, Michael (Nena) and Jeffrey (Emma), were the cornerstones of his life. Their shared moments created a bond that enriched his days and filled his heart with joy.
One of John's greatest passions was golf, a love he shared with his dad and brothers. John loved spending time on the fairways of Bellwood Oaks, his favorite course in Hastings. Those special afternoons on the course were something he always looked forward to with his family. Being a member of the Hastings High School golf team was the highlight of his senior year.
The family cabin held a special place in John's heart. He created memories that will last a lifetime including; fishing, evenings around the bonfire laughing with s'mores in hand, floating in the lake on a sunny day, puzzling, and so many other cherished moments. John loved all things sports, with hockey being his favorite. Many winter evenings were spent with family cheering on the Wild. He also enjoyed late-night UFC events with his brothers, reveling in the excitement of sports and the laughter of shared moments.
At home, John found comfort in movies, often staying up late with his mom for movie marathons that fostered their special bond. These treasured moments illustrated his love for family and the comforting warmth of home, which was his favorite place.
He is survived by his loving parents, Jon and Rochelle Gegen; his brothers, Michael (Nena Krick) Gegen and Jeffrey (Emma O'Connell) Gegen; grandparents, Judith Capeti, William and Jill Gegen, and Robert and Karen Prinsen; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; as well as many beloved friends.
A special thank you to the incredible team at Children's Hospital Minneapolis, whose kindness, dedication, and care brought comfort and strength to John and his family during his long journey.
