Larry Dennis Amundson, age 77, of Houlton, WI, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on January 7, 2026. He was born on August 14, 1948, in Prairie Farm, WI. Larry lived a life dedicated to family and service.
After graduating from high school, Larry married the love of his life Donna Kahl and together were blessed with 3 children. Larry first pursued an education in auto mechanics and began his career at a local dealership. His path took a commemorative turn when he was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War, serving his country with honor as a helicopter mechanic. Upon returning home, he furthered his education in machine tool ultimately becoming a skilled machinist. He dedicated 41 years of his life as a machinist and supervisor at Remmele Engineering.
Larry’s commitment to his community was evident through his 25 years with the St. Joseph Fire Department, where he served as a firefighter and captain. In addition, he also served as a first responder for 15 years for St. Joe. Even in retirement, his dedication to service continued as he worked with NORA (Nationwide Organ Recovery Alliance), transporting donated kidneys across Minnesota & Wisconsin, further illustrating his selflessness and commitment to helping others. More recently they volunteered their time to help others at the Cornerstone Church Food Fresh Express. Donna will be forever grateful for their love, support and friendship. Donna had an in-home daycare for 37 years that they both enjoyed. The cherished memories and bonds are something to last a lifetime, he was lovingly known as Bompa Larry.
A gifted problem-solver, Larry was known for his ability to fix anything he set his mind to. He cherished family above all else and enjoyed their large family trips to Mexico in the winter and to Cable, WI over the 4th of July. Larry enjoyed hunting, ATVing, and spending time at their family cabin. Larry will be remembered by many for his kind and gentle demeanor.
Larry will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Donna; children Kelly (Greg) Yocom and their daughter Madison, Ryan (Jill) Amundson and their children Bradley and Garrett (Cherry); Sister-in-Law Sally Wirth, Sister-in-Law Bonnie (Paul) Krahenbuhl; Sisters Sharon (John) Handorf and Carol (Larry) Sylte as well as many beloved nieces and nephews and numerous cherished friends.
He is preceded in death by his infant daughter Lori; parents Wilford and Alice Amundson; infant brother Wilber, infant sister Arlene and brother Wil. Father & Mother in Law Lyle & Chloe Kahl; Brother-in-Law DeWayne Wirth.
Visitation for Larry will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026 at O'Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 11th St S., Hudson, WI from 1-4pm and a funeral service will be held the following day on Monday, January 12, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1205 6th Street, Hudson, WI at 11am with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the family and will be distributed to Larry's favorite charities. Service with be livestreamed HERE
