Lawrence (Larry) Frederick Johnston was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on August 2, 1930 to Arnold V. and Rosina E. Johnston. He died April 1, 2026, in Hudson, Wisconsin. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Miriam and his brother Bryce (Nora). He is survived by his ‘adopted’ family, Carrie (Ed) Brockman Marchan, Koreen (Al) Brockman Theisen, and ‘adopted’ grandchildren, Whitney (Josh Kane) Theisen, Connor (Maggie Nelson) Theisen, Lily Marchan and Vivian (Isaac) Toman.
Larry graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul in 1948 and attended Hamline University for two year before enlisting in the Air Force in December of 1950. Unfortunately he was involved in a tragic gunshot accident when he was a radar operator at the Fort Williams Army base just south of Portland, Maine. He spent over a year at the Walter Reed Military Hospital. Once he returned home, he continued his education and graduated from Hamline University in 1956. Larry worked as an income tax examiner with the State of Minnesota for almost thirty years before retiring in June of 1985.
Larry, Miriam and Rosina became part of the ‘adopted’ Brockman family when Dorothy and Joe Brockman began inviting them to family holidays. This tradition continued throughout Larry’s life.
Larry enjoyed traveling, watching NASCAR, Minnesota Wild hockey games and the University of Minnesota hockey games, and reading the Wall Street Journal. He had a kind soul displayed a quiet demeanor to everyone that knew him. Most recently he has lived at the Christian Community Home in Hudson Wisconsin where he touched the hearts of staff who assisted him with care and compassion.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday April 18th, 2026 4 PM at O’Connell Funeral Home in Hudson, Wisconsin. Visitation will be one half hour prior.
