LaVonne Marie Obermueller McCombie, age 89 of Hudson, passed away Sunday April 26, 2026 at Christian Community Home in Hudson.
LaVonne was born on February 20, 1937, the eldest daughter of Albert J. Obermueller and Rosella (Strehlo) Obermueller at the Daily Maternity Home in Hudson, WI. She attended kindergarten at 4th Street elementary. In 1943 she moved with her parents to a farm near Glenwood City, WI where she attended grades 1 through 7 at Pine Heights, a one room rural country school and grades 9 though 12 at Glenwood City High School, graduating summa cum laud, in 1955. Married to Richard Meulemans of Downing, WI from 1955 to 1968; In 1971 she was married to Thomas McCombie, Jr. of Hudson, WI.
Besides her career of homemaker and mother, LaVonne was employed as a bookkeeper at Labon Truck Stop for 11 years and 13 years as Municipal Clerk for the Village of North Hudson where she earned the Certified Municipal Clerk status. LaVonne’s hobbies included gardening, camping, hiking, traveling and photography. After retirement she spent much time volunteering especially at St. Croix Couty Historical Society where she served as Membership Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, President and co-President. During her tenure she instigated and lead the initiative of providing a public restroom for the museum, restoring the First Bank stained-glass window, which hangs in the Hudson Area library, and procuring memorial monuments for the graves of William & Stephen Phipps. She instigated the return of St. Croix County Historical Society to its original venue while establishing a Hudson area historical association. LaVonne also volunteered at the Phipps Center for the Arts, St. Patrick’s Church, Democratic Party of St. Croix County and Operation Help.
She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands; she is survived by six children Michael, Joseph and Peter Meulemans, Marianne Recend, Julie Cole, Jacquelyn Globke, two stepsons, Thomas III and Michael McCombie; 8 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 2 adopted granddaughters, 12 great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren, and 2 great-great step grandchildren.
LaVonne cared about the environment and recycled before it was popular, she lived her motto “waste not, want not.” Her philosophy: “Happiness is wanting what you have—not having what you want.”
Visitation 12 Noon -1PM Monday May 4 with 1 PM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1500 Vine St. Hudson. Burial church cemetery.
