Lois Wernlund

Lois Mae Wernlund, age 88, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the Baldwin Care Center. Lois was born on June 9, 1930 in a house in the Town of Hammond the youngest of three daughters to John & Josephine (Flipse) Bosman. Lois met Kenneth “Keck” Wernlund when her family moved from Roberts to Baldwin as a 7th grader. They dated through high school & married on September 10, 1951 in Baldwin. A week & a half later, Kenneth left for the Korean War for 1½ years. After his return, their union was blessed with two children, Kay & Gary.

Lois started working in the Baldwin High School office & at sporting events while a student there. While raising a family over the next several years, she continued to work at various offices & businesses in the community, such as the FHA office, Midland Co-op, Circuiton (Fabri-tek), VandeBerg Ace Hardware, Anderson Ford, & Boldt’s Plumbing & Heating.

Lois was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church in Baldwin. She was the first woman elected to the Board of Trustees of the church. Lois also loved music. She started singing in competitions while in high school & continued to sing in the church choir. Additionally, she performed duets with several local people, helped with her children’s Sunday School music & with the 4-H music project. Lois enjoyed participating in community cantatas, sometimes singing as an alto solo.

Lois learned to fish from her dad. She & Kenneth enjoyed spending time fishing & taking out their boat numerous times each year, especially their annual week of family vacation at Big Clam Lake in Siren, WI.

Lois loved watching sports from the time she was in high school. She always cheered on her children & grandchildren enthusiastically at basketball, football, volleyball, & soccer games as well as diving competitions. She enjoyed watching baseball, football, the Badgers & the Packers.

Lois will remain in the hearts of her children, Kay (Duane) Werner of River Falls, WI, & Gary (Lori) Wernlund of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren, Lindsey (Paul) VanDyke, Hillary (Trevor) Walz, Matthew (fiancée Nicole Pinter) Werner, & Julie Werner; great-grandson, Cole VanDyke; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family, & close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; parents, John & Josephine; sisters, Harriet (Merton) Vrieze & Frances (Edwin) Ferg; in-laws, Helen Larson, Alrose Venneman, Donna Meyers, & John “Bud” Wernlund.

A Gathering of Family & Friends will take place from 4-7:00 PM on Friday, May 10, 2019 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin, WI. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday May 11, 2019 at First Reformed Church of Baldwin, WI, with a Visitation one-hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to First Reformed Church, 1120 11th Ave, Baldwin, WI 54002. Services entrusted to O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin.
