In Loving Memory of Louie
Our precious 8-month-old son Louie passed away on Friday, October 9th at 12:12 PM. Although his life was far too short, Louie filled each of his 8 months with more happiness, love, and joy than we could have ever imagined was possible.
Louie was the happiest, chunkiest, most perfect baby and he had a way of making everyone around him smile. Somehow, he was able to develop a connection with absolutely anyone. From little kids at his siblings’ school to relatives that don’t connect easily with babies, any time spent around Louie was sure to have them laughing, smiling and often asking to hold him. We had never seen anything like it. He simply had a gift for making people feel happy and loved.
He also had a wonderfully simple way of letting us know exactly what he wanted. The only things that ever seemed to make Louie angry were seeing his bottle and realizing it was not yet in his mouth or being contained in an area of the house that did not allow for maximum exploration. That was about as serious as life ever got for our smiley boy.
More than anything, Louie loved his family with an intensity that was impossible to miss. His sister Nora and brother Alfie were his absolute favorite people. He would watch everything they did with a huge smile and laugh and giggle at their antics. So many times, their gestures would make him belly laugh, and his parents attempts of those same gestures would result in a dead pan stare. His parents always thought it was hilarious and knew that he did too. He loved being wherever his family was.
Louie’s love for his Momma was especially beautiful to witness. He started crawling at 6 months of age, and from there would follow her around everywhere making sure she knew he was smiling. He created the sweetest game with her, where he would crawl over and lean his head on her chest with his mouth wide open asking for a kiss. Once received he would crawl away to go play, only to come back 10 seconds later asking for another kiss. He did this on repeat, and it was the cutest and most special thing we had ever seen.
Louie changed his Dad forever. From the moment he joined us, there was never a doubt he was the perfect piece to complete our family. Bedtime routine often included Dad feeding Louie once, feeding Louie twice and then rocking him until he fell asleep. It was always his favorite part of the day. The way he looked at Daddy would make the toughest man melt.
On Tuesday, October 6th, our lives were changed forever when Louie suffered a respiratory and cardiac arrest while at daycare and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital. Despite the extraordinary efforts by the Ellsworth EMT, River Falls and Children’s Hospitals, and
everyone who fought and prayed alongside him, his brain was without oxygen for too long and it was not possible to survive. He passed away surrounded by many dozens of family members and friends, and in the arms of his parents, sister and brother.
We will forever wonder what Louie’s life would have looked like – the boy and man he would have become, the things that he would have loved, and the memories we should have made together. Fortunately, one thing we will never wonder is whether he felt our love.
Louie was loved completely by everyone who was lucky enough to meet him. His parents and siblings were enamored by him, and they are certain he felt that love every day. In his 8 months, he left an imprint on more hearts than many people do in an entire lifetime. We will carry Louie with us in everything we do from here.
Our most perfect Louie, you were here for far too short a time, but you made our world immeasurably better by being in it.
We love you, Louie. We always will.
