Margaret “Jean” Schachtner

Margaret “Jean” Schachtner, age 88 of Somerset, passed away February 6, 2019 at her home. Jean was born to James Leland and Margaret (Dunn) Hanks on November 3, 1930, in Lake City, Iowa. She was the second of five daughters: Joan (dec.), Lois of Auburn, IA, Shirley (dec.), and Joyce (dec.).

She met and fell in love with a handsome young guy who became the love of her life. She and Harold Schachtner became engaged on June 18, 1948, marrying June 15, 1949 at St. Patrick’s Church, Cedar Township, Iowa. They later moved to Somerset, Wisconsin, where they’ve resided since.

Jean is survived by her husband, Harold; children, Margaret (Terry) Cook, Mary Jane (Brian) Hopp, Cathleen (David) Bonniwell, Harold, Jr., Christine (Doyle) Smith, William (Marie), Carol (Perry) Schachtner-Krieble, Joseph (Patty); 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Copp; sisters-in-law, Wilma Schachtner, Helen Schachtner, Helen Johnson; brothers-in-law, Gerald Schachtner and Richard Johnson; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Jean’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, at St. Anne’s Church, 141 Church Hill Rd., Somerset, with Fr. Andy Anderson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the mass at church. Interment will take place at St. Anne’s Cemetery.
