Mary Lou Matzek, age 76, of Plum City, WI, passed peacefully in her sleep on May 30, 2025. Mary was born on March 15, 1949, in Plum City, the daughter of Ed and Arlene (Weissinger) Klein. She began her education at St. John's Catholic School, then attended and graduated from Plum City High School with the Class of 1967. On June 21, 1969, she married her high school sweetheart, Douglas Matzek. Together they welcomed a daughter, Lisa.
After high school, Mary worked at Wisconsin Gas Company for three years before beginning her lifelong career in banking in Ellsworth, WI. Over her 45-year career, she worked primarily at the same location, though the bank changed names several times throughout the years. Mary was no stranger to long hours on the farm-she grew up working on her parents' farm and later worked alongside her husband on his family's dairy farm.
Mary will be remembered for the sparkle in her eye, her warm smile, and the compassion and kindness she showed to everyone she met. She had a deep love for music and enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and quilting in her free time. You may have run into her at the Pierce County Fair, Plum City Lion's Club, the Plum City Legion Hall, or a Plum Creek Quilters event. She loved all family-related activities-whether supporting her daughter, spending time with her siblings and extended family, or, most of all, keeping up with her beloved grandchildren.
Mary will remain in the hearts of her daughter, Lisa (Chris) Iverson; grandchildren, Alyssa and Isaac Iverson; siblings: John (Nancy) Klein, Al (Sandy) Klein, Harry (Jan) Klein, Susan Sanders, Shirley (Todd) Sueppel, Andy (Sandy) Klein, and Mike (Kanya) Klein; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Fred Finstad, Dan DeLong, Nancy (Doug) Weiss, and Bob (Lori) Matzek; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Doug Matzek; parents, Ed and Arlene Klein; twin sister, Linda DeLong; sister, Sandie Finstad; and her father- and mother-in-law, Ralph and Maxine Matzek.
Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Matzek will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 13 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 212 Church Road, Plum City. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband in the parish cemetery. Immediately following the burial, family and friends are invited to continue celebrating her life at Molly's on Main in Plum City.
Memorials are preferred to the discretion of the family. Funeral services are entrusted to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Ellsworth.
