Mavis Jean Ruud, age 91, of Hudson, Wisconsin, passed away Thursday April 4, 2019 at Christian Community Home with family by her side. Mavis was born August 13, 1927 in Wilmot, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Palmer and Elsie Holman. Mavis had a brother Bruce who was 10 years younger. Mavis graduated from High School in Minneapolis and on June 8, 1946, Mavis married Paul Ruud, they had three children together Jan, Cathy and Tom. They built their family home in Bloomington, MN in 1955. It was there where they became very close friends with Joan and Fritz Driver and their 9 children. Mavis never drove so Joan would drive them grocery shopping every week. Mavis and Paul loved to travel and went on many adventures with their children, including several trips to South Dakota to visit “the farm” in Wilmot where Mavis’s parents lived, as well as many trips to the Badlands and the Blackhills. They would often travel with Mavis’s brother Bruce and his wife DeDe, they enjoyed going to Las Vegas, Cabo San Lucas and Aruba. They also made trips to visit Paul’s Mother Millie and his sister Junice in Seattle, Washington and would make stops on the way to Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. This sense of adventure has carried on through their entire family.

In 1967 they relocated to Rice Lake, Wisconsin, because of Paul’s employment with Wright Products. They both loved spending many weekends and Holidays at Tiger Musky Resort on the Chippewa Flowage fishing and playing cards with family and friends, and Uncle Charlie. After retirement they would take lengthy road trips to visit family and friends in Las Vegas, and then on to California, a stop at Yosemite and then again the National Parks in Utah, Wyoming and Montana. Some of the most memorable trips they made were to Canada and Alaska. Paul loved to fish and as long as he could find Mavis a couple of gift shops she would be happy. In 2002 their son Tom and his wife Mel purchased Clearwater Resort on the Upper Eau Claire Chain of Lakes in Gordon, Wisconsin. Mavis and Paul enjoyed spending time there with the rest of the family. After Paul passed away in 2009 Mavis moved to Wintergreen in Hudson, Wisconsin, where she made many friends including Dorothy Cudd. Mavis really enjoyed playing Bridge, 500 and Bingo and socializing.

Mavis will forever be in the hearts of her family. She is survived by her children, Jan (Jerry) Hauck, Oak Grove, Mn, Cathy Ann Sorum, Hudson, WI, Thomas (Melanie)Ruud, Gordon, Wisconsin. Grandchildren Paul (Roslyn) Hauck, Barron, WI, Shannon (Tony) Smieja, Mahtomedi, MN, Justin (Andrea) Ruud, Hutchinson, MN, Nicole Ruud (Rafael Pepino) San Diego, CA. Several Great children, a Sister in law DeDe Holman and Nieces and Nephews. Mavis was preceded in death By her parents, Palmer and Elsie Holman, Husband Paul, Son in law Gerry Sorum and Brother Bruce Holman.

A memorial service for Mavis will be held on Sunday April 14, 2019, at 3:00pm with a celebration of life from 1-3pm before the service at O’Connell Family Funeral Home.
