Melitta Johannas Augusta Doornink, age 84 of Baldwin, passed away, surrounded by her family, on August 25, 2018 at her home. Melitta was born on May 29, 1934 in Berlin, Germany, to parents Alfred and Gertrude (Freese) Walter. In 1950 she graduated from Bank and Insurance College in Berlin and worked for Allianz as a small claims adjustor. Melitta fell in love with John Doornink, a U.S. Army soldier stationed in Berlin, and the couple were united in marriage on December 21, 1962 at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin. Their union was blessed with two children. Melitta helped her husband on their dairy farm and worked as the Assistant Manager at the Ben Franklin store in Baldwin. She enjoyed working with people and appreciated the friendships she made with co-workers. Melitta loved flowers and going to the local farmers market. She also enjoyed traveling when the opportunity presented itself; visiting places such as Hawaii or the countries of Europe, and most recently revisiting Berlin, Germany.
Melitta is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, John; children, Ron (Katherine) Doornink, and Doreen Doornink (fiancé Greg Johnson); granddaughter, Elizabeth Doornink. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Horst and Alfred Walter.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Melitta’s life will be held from 11:00am-2:00pm on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Historic Woodside Place, 2053 County Rd N, Baldwin. Memorials are preferred to Adoray Hospice, the Baldwin Senior Center, or St. Croix Animal Friends.
