Ellsworth

Melvalene “Mellie” Wegerer, age 82, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, surrounded by love.

Born on July 15, 1943, in Taylors Falls, Minnesota, to Michael and Hazel Holland, Mellie grew up in the town she held dear. She later earned her GED from St. Croix Falls before entering the workforce, where she spent many years as a dedicated and beloved bartender. Throughout her career in Ellsworth, she worked at several well-known establishments including the Big Horn and Sonny’s, forming lifelong friendships and cherished memories along the way.

Mellie was a devoted mother and proud grandmother, Mellie was known for her warmth, her sense of humor, and her deep commitment to family. She was a natural caretaker who ensured those around her felt seen, supported, and loved.

She found joy in simple pleasures—gardening her favorite moss flowers, sharing stories, and later in life, enjoying the camaraderie of social outings and occasional trips to the casino. Mellie had a gift for making others feel welcome, and her kind spirit touched the hearts of many in her community.

Mellie is lovingly survived by her children: Bob (Debra) Gabert, Rus (Darcy) Gabert, Shelly Shaw, and JoAnn Gabert; her grandchildren: Dustin (Kathy), Tabatha (Travis) Bensen, Brandon Shaw, Samantha Rohl, and Brooklyn Gabert; and her ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Arthur, and her brothers and sisters.

A private burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery. Mellie will be remembered for the light she brought into the lives of others—her generous heart, lively spirit, and unwavering love for her family.
