Richard Earl Bennett

November 12, 1940 — October 1, 2025

Hudson

Richard Earl Bennett, age 84, of Hudson, WI, went home to Jesus on October 1, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family, following complications from heart failure. He will be so dearly missed.

Dick was born in Lincoln, IL, on November 12, 1940, to Earl and Marian Bennett, and was the middle of their seven children. He graduated from River Falls High School (1958), the University of Wisconsin–River Falls (B.S. 1966), and the University of Colorado–Boulder (M.S. 1968). He was the first in his family to graduate from college. Dick joined 3M in 1969, where he worked for 32 years and retired as a Corporate Scientist—3M’s highest technical position. He was a prolific problem solver and the author of 13 patents.

Dick also had a deep passion for the outdoors, which he saw as “God’s paintbrush.” Hunting, fishing (especially panfish!), Boundary Water Canoe Area adventures, morel mushroom hunting, cutting wood, and caring for his lawn and gardens were among his beloved pursuits. He also had a deep desire to know God’s Word and God’s heart. He cared deeply for many and will be missed by many.

On October 6, 1962, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Mary Anne Anding. They were blessed to enjoy nearly 63 years of marriage and were known for their remarkable hospitality and love of Jesus. Dick and Mary were longtime members of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Afton, MN. Together they enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, and most especially being involved in the lives of their children and grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Bennett; children, Gregg (Diane) Bennett, Eric (Donna) Bennett, and Heidi (Chet) Bennett Cooper; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers, Dean (Pat) Bennett and Jim (Nancee) Bennett; brothers-in-law, Ralph DeRoy and Jerry Wilkens; sisters-in-law, Carol Bouvin and Kathy Stohl; many nieces and nephews; and many, many dear friends.

Visitation will take place from 4–7 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, at O’Connell Funeral Home, 520 11th St. S, Hudson, WI, and from 10–11 a.m. on Monday, October 13, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 14107 Hudson Rd. S, Afton, MN. His funeral will follow from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. on Monday, October 13, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church (address above).

Dick was an active and dedicated volunteer, serving for many years with the Hudson Area Backpack Program, PO Box 491, Hudson, WI 54016, to which memorial donations would be appreciated.
