Ronald E. Gaard

Ronald Eldon Gaard, age 78, of Ellsworth, WI passed away on February 11, 2025, at Preferred Senior Living in Ellsworth. He was born to Bud and Marian (Deitz) Gaard on October 12, 1946, in Wells, MN. Ron graduated from Ellsworth High School with the class of 1964, he then furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls.

Ron had a long and successful career in the car rental industry, managing National Car Rentals in Minneapolis, MN, and Budget Car Rentals in California, for nearly 35 years. His love for music was one of his greatest passions. Before entering the car rental business, Ron taught music classes in Clayton, WI, and was a talented clarinet player. He also enjoyed attending concerts and relished his time living in California.
In addition to his musical talents, Ron briefly pursued macramé, and at one point, he cared for two horses, “Champ” and “Major,” whom he loved dearly. He was also fond of poodles, with his most recent furry companion, Sophie, being a special part of his life.

Family was always very important to Ron, and he maintained close connections with his cousins and their families, always asking after them with care. Though farming was not his preferred activity, he was always willing to help when his cousin Terry needed assistance. Ron was known for his sensitivity, a man deeply in touch with his emotions, and he was loved for his kindness and devotion to his family and friends.
Ron is survived by his cousins: Janan (John) Prohaski, Dick (Jeanette) Cahalan, Charlie (Jan) Cahalan, John (Ginny) Cahalan, Mick (Debbie) Cahalan, Tom (Sue) Cahalan, Jodi Cahalan, Wanda (Tim) Larsen, Rita McGovern, Terry Gaard, and Debbie (John) Nahorniak. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Marian Gaard, and cousins, David Cahalan, Don Cahalan, and John McGovern.

A service in honor of Ron’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at O’Connell Funeral Home, 130 N Grant St., Ellsworth, WI. A gathering will begin at 10:30 AM. Later this spring, Ron will be laid to rest by his parents in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ellsworth.
