Shirley Jean Hughes

Shirley Jean Hughes, 94, of Hudson, WI, formerly of Newhall, CA, made her journey to Heaven on August 18, 2022, at the Comforts of Home.

Shirley was born on February 11, 1928, to Wilfred A. Dickerson and Mabel T. (Weberg) Dickerson in Bismarck, ND. She attended school in Cavalier and graduated from the Cavalier High School class of 1946.

Following high school graduation, Shirley attended College at the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, ND, graduating with a BA degree in Elementary Teaching and Theology in 1950.

After college, she would be united in marriage to Alden Thompson. Though the marriage would later be dissolved, the union would be blessed with two children, Terri and Tim. As a result of her degree, she found a position as a 3rd-grade teacher for several years and later stopped to stay home and taking care of her children.

Shirley committed her life to her faith, was heavily involved and a dedicated member of the Friendly Valley Community United Methodist Church in Santa Clarita, CA, and served as the secretary for nearly 20 years. She also adored music and sang in the church choir. She was entertained by cooking, sewing, and flower gardening during her free time. Shirley was an avid Dodgers baseball fan. After her retirement, she loved to travel and would be united in marriage in February 2005 to Donald Hughes. Shirley was a people person with a kind and loving heart. She will be deeply missed by all.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hughes; son, Tim Thompson; nephew, Lane Rybus; sister, Lois Rybus; parents, Wilfred and Mabel Dickerson. She is survived by her daughter, Terri (Ron) Schmid; Grandsons, Jacob and Alex; nephew, Richard Rybus and brother-in-law, Mark Rybus.
