Shirley Bernice Volmer, age 85, of Prescott, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2026, with her daughter by her side.
Shirley was born on August 19, 1940, in Hospers, Iowa, to Raymond and Aldena Schlotfeldt. Her father passed away in 1946, and her mother later remarried. Shirley was raised in South Dakota by her mother and stepfather. She graduated from college and began her career as a second-grade teacher in 1962.
Shirley was united in marriage to Larry Volmer on February 13, 1965. Together, they had two children, Brian, born in 1972, and Laura, born in 1975. Shirley was able to leave her teaching career to become a stay-at-home mother, a role she loved and excelled at. She was very hands-on in her children’s lives, serving as a PTA secretary and volunteering as her daughter’s Girl Scout leader. Shirley and Larry suddenly lost their beloved son, Brian, in January 1989, an event that changed the course of their lives forever. Through unimaginable heartbreak, Shirley’s love and strength for her surviving daughter and husband remained unwavering.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be remembered for her kindness, immense strength, and unconditional love for her family. Shirley was very crafty and enjoyed crocheting, creating countless hats, scarves, and personalized gifts for the people she loved. She also enjoyed watching sports with her husband and was a devoted supporter of local sports teams. Shirley loved cross-stitching as well and had a remarkable talent for making all of her many crafts look effortless.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Laura Volmer (Justin Westman); grandchildren, Alyssa Eich (Alex) and Sawyer Westman; great-grandchildren, Tessa and William Eich; and sister, Carol Pritchett (Schlotfeldt).
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Brian Volmer; husband, Larry Volmer; parents, Raymond and Aldena Schlotfeldt; and siblings, Ray, Luanna, and Joyce Schlotfeldt.
The family would like to thank St. Croix Hospice, especially Kacie, Kendall, Maddie, and Pastor Dan, for the compassionate care and support they provided to Shirley and her family. The family would also like to thank Shirley’s home health aide, Jodie, for the exceptional care and love she gave Shirley during the last four months of her life.
Shirley will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Mom, you were deeply loved, and you will be forever missed.
