Steven Donald Hanvelt passed away on April 17, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 29, 1952, in Ellsworth, Wisconsin, to Donald and Nina Hanvelt.
Growing up, Steve attended school in Ellsworth and went on to work at Twin City Shipyards. Over the years, he became a true jack of all trades, taking pride in being able to do just about anything and enjoying all types of work.
Steve was the proud father of seven children, building a family filled with laughter and love. He cared deeply for each of them and was a devoted family man with a special fondness for animals. On October 2, 2004, Steve married Loretta, who became a cherished partner in his life and a loving addition to the family he had already begun.
During his time in Ellsworth, Steve was a member of the Ellsworth Funsters, where he especially enjoyed dressing up as a clown and participating in local parades. He had a unique way of showing affection through playful teasing and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Steve took great pride in caring for his yard and enjoyed going for long drives. It was not uncommon to find him out in his van, stopping to visit friends and family along the way. He especially cherished time with his animals.
Steve is survived by his wife, Loretta Hanvelt; his children, Melissa Hanvelt, Kristina (Chad) Krumenauer, LaDona (Aaron) Maher, Amanda (Dustin) Griffin, Steven (Sarah) Hanvelt, Brandon Hanvelt, and Cory (Kaitlyn) Duray; his grandchildren, Dalton, Carson, Jared, Brooklyn, Riley, Alivia, Haylee, Kaeden, Sawyer, Owen, Ryker, Kami, Trinity, Clara, Riley, Colten, Logan, and Brennen; his sister, Carla (Mark) Hanvelt; his great-grandchild, Aiden; his cat, Maxine; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Nina Hanvelt; his brothers, Chuck, Glen, and Bill Brathall; his sisters, Lynda Harder and Donna Mae Hanvelt; and his grandson, Joshua Borst.
