d. March 9, 2017

Theodore “Ted” M. Holmes, age 84, of Glenwood City, WI, formerly Hudson, WI, passed away on March 9, 2017 at his home in Glenwood City.

Ted was born on October 8, 1932 in Stillwater, MN to Theodore and Nell (Steiner) Holmes. He grew up along the St. Croix River in Bayport, MN, where, for close to a century, his family’s ice business harvested and sold ice from the river to keep area residents’ ice boxes cold.  At the young age of fifteen, Ted was a world champion skeet shooter, winning numerous awards while competing against adults. He attended St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN, until he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was an airplane mechanic aboard the USS Coral Sea during the Korean War.

Ted was united in marriage to Mary Sue Thompson in March of 1966, and the two were married for 32 years, raising their family in Hudson, WI, until her passing in 1997. He was then united in marriage to Donna Carlson-Davis.

Ted was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending time hunting at his cabin in Northern Wisconsin and fishing on the St. Croix River and Lake Michigan. He also bred, raised, and trained AKC Champion Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; children: Merry (Ty) Holden, T.R. Holmes, Holly (Jeff) Lauseng, Mark (Sherry) Holmes, and Karen (Mike) Wertish; grandchildren: Evan, Keagan, and Annella Holden, Blake and Ashlee Holmes, Joshua Holmes, Breanna Brasser, Eric Holmes, and Chad and Laurel Wertish. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue; grandson, Christopher; sister, Annella Seiberlich; and parents, Theodore and Nell Holmes.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will take place from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St., Hudson. Interment with full military honors will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
