An american flag is waving in the wind against a blue sky

Farewell flag ceremony
The O’Connell Family Funeral Homes, which includes our onsite Countryside Crematory, continues their veteran and United States flag honor with their Farewell Flag Act of Reverence.

A meaningful and unique way to honor those who served
Families of veterans are seeking meaningful and unique ways to create a lasting memorial tribute to their loved one. This commemorative measure honors those proud men and women who have served to promote peace and security for our fellow Americans. The flag that once flew high which honors the freedoms our veterans stood for, shows it’s wear and fatigue as time passes, much like its veterans who once stood tall. The tattered flags adorn the container our veterans are placed in for their cremation.

How do you dispose of a flag with respect?
The United States Flag Code states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

How do I do this?
O’Connell Family Funeral Homes are proud to be the first and only in our area to offer such a dignified tribute to both the flag and deserving veterans.

You can bring used flags to either of our O’Connell Family Funeral Homes locations in Hudson or Baldwin, Wisconsin.

Upon receipt of the cremated remains of their veteran, the family will receive a certificate stating the last deed of service for that flag, which was to drape their veteran during the cremation disposition process.
