What About Medicare After Death? What Families Need to Know

What Happens to Medicare When Someone Dies?
When a loved one passes away, dealing with Medicare and Social Security can feel overwhelming. But understanding how Medicare coverage changes after death can help prevent financial surprises and reduce stress.

Step One: Reporting the Death
The funeral home will notify the Social Security Administration (SSA), either electronically or using Form SSA-721. This is typically all that’s needed—Medicare is automatically notified through SSA records. Families can still follow up with SSA directly to confirm.

When Medicare Coverage Ends
Coverage under Original Medicare (Parts A & B) ends on the date of death. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are officially canceled the first day of the following month, but coverage ends at death. This means families should not expect bills for care after the date of passing.

Do You Need to Cancel Medigap Policies?
Yes. Medigap (Supplement) insurance does not cancel automatically. The executor or family should contact the insurance carrier directly. Most will ask for a death certificate to complete the cancellation.

Premium Refunds May Be Available
If Medicare premiums were paid past the date of death—either directly or through Social Security deductions—the estate might be owed a refund. These are not always automatic. The executor may need to complete SSA Form SSA-1724 to claim any overpayments.

Social Security and Survivor Benefits
Social Security benefits end the month of death. If a check was deposited for that month, it must be returned. However, eligible family members may qualify for survivor benefits or the $255 lump-sum death benefit. It's best to call SSA or visit the local office to confirm.
